Hi. My name is Tom Bigelow and I retired from being the Rector of St. Luke's in Renton in 2004. During my last year there we had a blessed event that I want to tell you about. There was a man named Charles Custer who lived down the street from the church. He wasn't a member of our church and to my knowledge he never attended services but he was a friend. He was older and blind. I used to go to his house from time to time just to talk. He was very interesting since he had been raised and lived most all his life in Renton and had many stories to tell. He seemed very poor to me. He lived in the kitchen of his house so as only to heat the one room. He seemed to have two pairs of pants, one on and the other hanging to dry.
One day he died and when his will was made known, he had given St. Luke's close to one million dollars! At first we could hardly believe that it was true but it was and so we set up an endowment trust fund for the money. This way, Charles could continue to support St. Luke's for the rest of time. To put it mildly, we were extremely blessed and forever grateful to Charles.
In a much smaller way I intend to do the same thing. I have made the Church the beneficiary of my life insurance policy. This costs me nothing in my lifetime but it gives me the satisfaction of knowing that I can in a small way continue to support the Church I love for the rest of time.
I hope you might think and pray about doing the same thing. I have received an inward blessing from this and I believe you will too.
Blessings to you,
The Rev. Tom Bigelow
